What is a jowl lift?
Jowls form when the ligaments that anchor the cheek loosen and the fat above the jaw slides down past the mandible. The jaw line, once straight, develops a soft bulge with a small dip in front of it — the pre-jowl sulcus — that can make the mouth corners look downturned.
A jowl lift focuses on this zone rather than the whole face. The deeper SMAS layer is lifted back up towards the cheekbone and fixed, the skin is redraped without tension, and stubborn fat under the jaw can be refined with jawline liposuction in the same session.
Who is a good candidate for jowl surgery?
- Visible jowls that break the line of the jaw, especially in photos taken from the side.
- Marionette shadows running down from the corners of the mouth.
- Moderate skin laxity that devices and threads no longer lift.
- A cheek and neck that are still fairly firm — otherwise a fuller lift is better.
- Non-smokers in good general health with realistic expectations.
If the midface and neck are also loose, a full facelift or deep plane facelift will give a more balanced result than lifting the jowls alone.

How long is recovery after a jowl lift?
| Day 1–3 | Swelling and tightness along the jaw; compression garment worn, head raised to sleep. |
|---|---|
| Day 7–10 | Stitches removed; bruising fades and you can go out with light make-up. |
| Week 3–4 | Most swelling settles; numbness near the ear gradually improves. |
| Month 3–6 | The jaw line looks fully natural and scars soften. |
“A good jowl lift shows in the jaw line, not in the ear. If people notice the ear, the tension was put in the wrong place.”

What are the risks of jowl lift surgery?
As with any lifting surgery, risks include bruising, a collection of blood under the skin (haematoma), temporary numbness, visible or widened scars and, rarely, temporary weakness of the facial nerve branch that moves the lower lip. Smoking increases the risk of poor healing. Because the jaw keeps ageing, some softening returns over time — we explain what to expect at your consultation.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a jowl lift last?
Most patients keep a noticeably sharper jaw line for several years, although natural ageing continues from the new starting point.
Where are the scars?
They follow the crease in front of the ear and continue behind it, so they are well hidden once healed.
Can jowls be fixed without surgery?
Mild jowls may respond to non-surgical jawline lifting or threads, but these cannot remove loose skin.
Is a jowl lift the same as a mini facelift?
They overlap closely. A jowl lift concentrates on the jaw line, while a mini facelift may also lift the lower cheek.
How long should I stay in Seoul?
We recommend 10–14 days so stitches can be removed and Dr. Lee can check the result before you fly.
Will I look pulled?
The lift is done in the deeper layer, not by stretching skin, so the aim is a natural, rested jaw line.
