What does nasolabial fold filler do?
Everyone has nasolabial folds — they are where the cheek meets the upper lip. They deepen with age because the midface fat pads descend and thin, the bone beneath the nose recedes slightly, and the skin loses elasticity. The fold itself is rarely the whole problem; it is usually the visible edge of a cheek that has lost support.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) filler works on both levels. A firmer gel placed deep near the nose base (the pyriform area) lifts the root of the fold, and a softer gel can blur what remains on the surface. When sagging rather than volume loss is the driver, a device such as Ultherapy Prime or a combined liquid facelift often gives a more natural result than filler alone.
Who is a good candidate for smile-line filler?
- Mild to moderate folds that are visible at rest, not only when smiling.
- A flat or hollow area beside the nose that casts a shadow down to the mouth.
- People who want little downtime and can return to work the next day.
- Patients who are not ready for surgery but want a measured, reversible change.
- Good general health — no active skin infection, and not pregnant or breastfeeding.
Deep folds with heavy, overhanging cheeks usually respond better to lifting. Our page on nasolabial folds treatment compares all the options, including surgery.

What is recovery like after filler?
| Same day | Mild swelling and tenderness; avoid pressing or massaging the area. |
|---|---|
| Day 1–3 | Swelling settles; small bruises can be covered with make-up after 24 hours. |
| Week 2 | Gel integrates with the tissue; a review can be arranged if you are still in Seoul. |
| Month 9–18 | Filler gradually breaks down; a lighter top-up maintains the result. |
“I would rather add a little less and see you smile normally than chase every line until the face looks heavy.”
Dr. Lee Yoo-jung · Chief DirectorWhat are the risks of nasolabial filler?
Common, short-lived effects are swelling, bruising and tenderness. Less often, small lumps or unevenness appear, which can be massaged or dissolved with hyaluronidase. The area beside the nose has important blood vessels, so the rare but serious risk is a vascular occlusion. We reduce this with careful technique, cannulas where suitable and aspiration, and we keep hyaluronidase on hand. Overfilling the fold can make the mouth look heavy, so we deliberately stay conservative.
Frequently asked questions
How long does nasolabial fold filler last?
Most hyaluronic acid fillers in this area last around 9–18 months, depending on the product, your metabolism and how much you move your face.
Does it hurt?
Most patients describe pressure and a brief sting. Numbing cream and the lidocaine inside the filler keep it comfortable.
Will I look puffy or unnatural?
Not if the volume is placed in the right layer and kept modest. Dr. Lee usually treats the support beside the nose rather than filling the line itself.
Can filler be removed if I do not like it?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase.
Can I fly after nasolabial filler?
Yes, flying the next day is generally fine. Allow a day or two in Seoul in case of bruising or a quick review.
Who does the injections?
Dr. Lee Yoo-jung assesses and injects you herself, from consultation through follow-up.
