Lip Reduction in Seoul

For lips that feel too thick, heavy or turned out for the rest of the face. Dr. Lee Yoo-jung removes tissue from the inner, wet part of the lip so the scar stays inside the mouth and the lip border is left untouched.

The short answer

Lip reduction (reduction cheiloplasty) makes the upper lip, lower lip or both thinner by removing a horizontal strip of mucosa and a little underlying tissue from the inside of the lip. The lip rolls slightly inward, showing less red lip and looking less prominent. Because the incision lies on the inner lip, there is no visible scar on the face when the mouth is closed.

What is lip reduction surgery?

Some lips look full because of their thickness, others because they evert — roll outward so more of the red lip shows. Lip reduction treats both by removing a measured strip from the inside of the lip, then closing it so the lip turns slightly inward.

The outer border of the lip — the line that defines its shape, including the Cupid's bow — is not cut. This keeps the outline natural. When a lip looks prominent because the teeth or jaw push it forward, surgery on the lip alone has limits, and Dr. Lee will say so. Patients who want the opposite change can read about lip augmentation.

Who is a good candidate for lip reduction?

  • Naturally thick or heavy lips that feel out of balance with your face.
  • Everted lips showing a lot of inner, wet lip.
  • An imbalance between upper and lower lip that bothers you.
  • Lips enlarged by old filler that has been dissolved but left excess tissue.
  • No active cold sores or mouth infection at the time of surgery.

If your lower face also looks long, philtrum shortening may be worth discussing at the same consultation.

How is lip reduction performed?

01 Planning Dr. Lee assesses lip height, eversion and balance with your mouth relaxed, closed and smiling.
02 Marking An ellipse is drawn on the inner lip; its width sets how much the lip thins.
03 Reduction The mucosa and a thin layer of underlying tissue are removed, sparing the muscle as far as possible.
04 Closure The inner lip is closed with fine sutures so the lip rolls gently inward.

What is recovery like after lip reduction?

Day 1–3 Lips swollen and tight; cold compresses, soft food, drinking through a straw if easier.
Day 7–10 Stitches dissolve or are removed; talking and eating feel more normal.
Week 2–4 Most visible swelling has gone; mild firmness remains.
Month 1–3 The lip softens and its final shape appears.

“Thinner is not the goal. A lip that suits your face and still moves softly when you speak is.”

Dr. Lee Yoo-jung · Chief Director
vii.

What are the risks of lip reduction surgery?

Risks include prolonged swelling, temporary numbness or altered sensation, small asymmetries, a firm scar band inside the lip and, if too much is removed, a lip that looks thin or flat — which is far harder to fix than taking a little more later. That is why reduction is planned conservatively. Infection is uncommon with good mouth hygiene. If you get cold sores, preventive medication may be advised.

Frequently asked questions

Will there be a visible scar?

No. The incision is on the inside of the lip, where it is not visible when the mouth is closed.

Is lip reduction permanent?

Yes, the removed tissue does not return, although lips naturally thin a little with age.

Can I speak normally afterwards?

Speech may feel stiff for a week or two because of swelling, then returns to normal.

Can lip reduction be done on just the upper or lower lip?

Yes. Many patients need only one lip, chosen according to balance.

How long should I stay in Seoul?

About a week, so Dr. Lee can check healing before you fly.

Does it fix lips that protrude because of the teeth?

Only partly. If the teeth or jaw push the lips forward, orthodontic or jaw assessment may be needed.
