The short answer

Thermage FLX is a monopolar radiofrequency device that heats the deep dermis and the fibrous layers beneath it while cooling the skin surface. The heat makes collagen contract at once and remodel over the following months, so skin looks firmer, smoother and slightly lifted. It suits early laxity and crepey texture, including the eyelids, has essentially no downtime and usually lasts about a year.

What is Thermage FLX?

Thermage FLX is the fourth-generation Thermage system. Its tip delivers radiofrequency energy in a uniform field, protected by cooling sprays so the surface stays comfortable. The FLX model measures skin contact on every pulse and adjusts energy automatically, which makes treatment more even than earlier versions.

Where Ultherapy targets the deeper SMAS for lift, Thermage works on skin quality and firmness. It is also one of the few devices with a dedicated eye tip, used for hooding and crepey lids. For an overview of all energy devices, see laser lifting.

Who is Thermage FLX for?

  • Early loss of firmness in the cheeks and lower face.
  • Crepey or fine-lined skin that does not hold make-up well.
  • Mild upper-lid hooding or crinkly lower-lid skin (Eye Thermage).
  • Patients who want no downtime at all.
  • Thin faces where heating fat with ultrasound is a concern.

Very loose upper lids need upper blepharoplasty; Thermage will not remove a fold of skin.

How a Thermage FLX session works

01 Plan Dr. Lee decides shot count and where to concentrate passes, for example the jawline and cheeks.
02 Grid marking A temporary grid is applied so pulses are evenly spaced.
03 Treatment Each pulse brings brief deep heat, followed by cooling. Eye shields protect the eyes for lid treatment.
04 Finish The grid is wiped off and you can wear make-up straight away.

Risks and side effects

Side effects are usually limited to temporary redness and swelling. Rarely, small blisters, grid marks or minor surface burns occur. Results are gradual and some people see less change than others; Thermage is a maintenance treatment, not a substitute for surgery.

Does Thermage FLX hurt?

Each pulse is a short burst of heat. Numbing cream and the cooling system keep most people comfortable.

How long does Thermage last?

Usually about a year, sometimes longer, depending on age and skin.

Can Thermage be done on the eyelids?

Yes. Eye Thermage uses a dedicated tip with protective eye shields.

Is there any downtime?

Essentially none. You can return to work or sightseeing the same day.

Can it be combined with Ultherapy?

Yes. The two work at different depths and are often done together.
