What is Ultherapy Prime and how is it different?
Ultherapy uses micro-focused ultrasound to create small thermal points at set depths — typically 1.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm. At 4.5 mm it reaches the SMAS, the muscular layer that surgeons tighten during a facelift. The heated points contract immediately and then trigger new collagen over the following months.
Ultherapy Prime keeps the same mechanism but adds a higher-resolution imaging display and a faster, more ergonomic platform, so each line can be placed precisely around bone and anatomy. If you are comparing ultrasound devices in general, see our HIFU facelift page; for the classic treatment overview see Ultherapy face lifting. Current packages are on the Ultherapy cost page.
Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy Prime?
- Early jowls and a softening jawline in your late 30s to 50s.
- Mild cheek descent with deepening smile lines.
- Heavy-feeling brows that make the upper lids look hooded.
- Loss of definition under the chin without marked loose skin.
- People maintaining a facelift result or postponing surgery.
Very thin faces may lose some fullness, so we adjust depth and shot count carefully. Marked sagging will not be corrected by any device; a mini facelift is more honest advice in that case.
Ultherapy Prime vs Thermage FLX vs EMFACE
| Ultherapy Prime | Thermage FLX | EMFACE | |
| Energy | Micro-focused ultrasound | Monopolar radiofrequency | RF + muscle stimulation |
| Depth | Skin to SMAS (up to 4.5 mm) | Dermis, broad heating | Skin and facial muscles |
| Best for | Deep lift: jaw, cheeks, brow | Skin tightening and texture | Midface and brow tone |
| Discomfort | Moderate, at deeper lines | Mild to moderate heat | Mild; tingling and contractions |

What is recovery like after Ultherapy?
| Same day | Mild redness and slight swelling; some people see a small immediate tightening. |
|---|---|
| Day 1–7 | Tenderness along the jaw when chewing or touching can last a few days to weeks. |
| Week 4–8 | Collagen remodelling begins; skin starts to feel firmer. |
| Month 2–3 | Lift and definition are most visible; effects typically last about a year. |
“I plan Ultherapy like a small facelift: where to lift, where to leave alone, and where volume must be protected.”
Dr. Lee Yoo-jung · Chief DirectorWhat are the risks of Ultherapy Prime?
Discomfort during treatment is the most common complaint. Afterwards, redness, swelling, tenderness and occasional bruising or raised welts can occur and fade. Rare effects include temporary numbness or nerve irritation, and in thin faces an unwanted loss of fullness if energy is placed too densely. Results are gradual and vary between people; a small minority see little change, which we discuss honestly at consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Does Ultherapy Prime hurt?
It can be uncomfortable, especially over bone at the deeper depth. Numbing cream and adjusting energy keep it tolerable for most people.
When will I see results?
Some see slight tightening straight away, but the main result appears gradually over two to three months as collagen builds.
How long do results last?
Usually around a year, after which a maintenance session is common.
How many shots do I need?
It depends on the size of your face and areas treated. Dr. Lee will recommend a shot count at consultation; packages are on the Ultherapy cost page.
Can I fly after Ultherapy?
Yes. There is no wound, so you can fly the same or next day.
Is Ultherapy Prime the same as HIFU?
Ultherapy is one type of HIFU. Its distinguishing feature is built-in imaging that shows the tissue layers during treatment.
